A nice addition to classic literature collections and a good way to enhance the English curriculum. Classic for a reason By Mom Another step in my journey of reading or re-reading classics I missed or have forgotten; and another instance of realizing why classics are classics. Reading this later in life gives a different picture of the story, the writing style and the the times from which it came. This would be a wonderful mother-daughter read. It brings forward opportunities to talk about relationships - what makes one good or bad - as well as dedication, study, and a myriad of other topics that an adolescent faces.
As Jane's life is detailed the unwanted child, bullying, powerlessness all rise up; so too does the consequence of standing up for oneself.

I bought it quickly as a last purchase to meet the free shipping minimum, and I remembered my high schooler needs to read it next semester. I simply added it to my cart because it said "Classic" and the cover fooled me.
Ludicrously large, but the text is miniscule. A total waste of money. The story held me wanting to keep reading. The relationships that are built are the types that you can learn lessons from.
The Virginian by Owen Wister
Even from the characters such as Helen, who we meet early on, there is something that we can learn from striving to be closer to God. Jane's character is the type that we can all learn something from.

She is hardworking, and thoughtful. She never thinks of herself more highly than she ought, and this type of character makes it easier for her to see the good in everyone around her. My son challenged me to read this book while he was reading it for a class assignment.
